Selective high schools are specialist NSW schools for intellectually gifted and high potential students in Years 7-12. NSW offers 17 fully selective high schools, 26 partially selective high schools, 4 agricultural selective high schools, and Aurora College (online selective classes for rural areas). These schools provide accelerated learning with similar-ability peers.
Selective high school placement is highly competitive, with approximately 4,200 places available across NSW selective schools and around 17,500-18,500 students sitting the test each year—giving students roughly a 24% chance of receiving an offer.
The Selective High School Placement Test for 2027 entry will be held on 1-2 May 2026 for students currently in Year 5 or beginning Year 6. Selective school applications open 6 November 2025 and close 20 February 2026. Results are typically released in mid-year. Check the NSW Department of Education website for the latest selective school test dates.
The selective school test assesses four areas: Reading (comprehension), Mathematical Reasoning (problem-solving), Thinking Skills (critical thinking and logic), and Writing (persuasive or narrative). Students are selected for placement based on their test performance across these four areas.
